Equipment

  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Grater
  • Spoon

Ingredients

  • 1 cup carrot grated
  • 1 apple grated
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp honey omit for babies under 1

Instructions

  • Grate your apple and carrot. Use the fine side of a grater to make sure the pieces are soft enough for small mouths. This is a great time to let your toddler help mix!
  • Add lemon juice and honey. Pour the lemon juice over the grated fruit and veggies to keep the apples from browning. Drizzle in honey for sweetness, but skip this if serving babies under 1 year.
  • Mix everything together. Gently toss with a spoon until the slaw is evenly coated. It should look bright and feel a little juicy—just right for toddlers.
  • Chill or serve right away. You can serve it immediately or pop it in the fridge for 10–15 minutes to cool. Let it sit slightly chilled for a refreshing snack or side.
  • Serve and enjoy! Use a toddler fork or spoon and serve with yogurt, sandwiches, or soft crackers. Let cool fully if your apple or carrot was slightly warm from prep.

Notes

Storage Tips: Store leftover slaw in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Stir before serving. Not suitable for freezing due to texture changes.
Age Modifications: For younger babies, finely grate both apple and carrot and skip honey. You can also steam the carrots briefly to soften them.
Allergy-Friendly Swaps: Replace honey with unsweetened applesauce or mashed banana for sweetness. Use dairy-free yogurt as a creamy dressing alternative if needed.
Boost Nutrition: Stir in a sprinkle of ground flaxseed or chia seeds, or top with finely chopped raisins or sunflower seeds for added fiber and healthy fats.
Busy Parent Tip: Make a double batch and store portions for the next day—it’s just as tasty served cold!
