Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Steamer basket optional
  • Potato masher or fork
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon

Ingredients

  • 2 medium potatoes peeled and chopped
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 2-3 tbsp milk dairy-free alternative
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter olive oil
  • pinch of salt optional for toddlers

Instructions

  • Cook the potatoes: Place potatoes in a saucepan, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until tender, about 10–12 minutes.
  • Steam the broccoli: In the last 5 minutes of cooking the potatoes, add broccoli to a steamer basket over the same pot, or boil lightly until bright green and tender.
  • Drain and combine: Drain potatoes and broccoli, then place them together in a mixing bowl.
  • Mash to desired texture: Mash well for younger babies, or leave some small chunks for older toddlers who can handle texture.
  • Add milk and butter: Stir in milk and butter until smooth and creamy. Adjust consistency by adding more milk if needed.
  • Serve warm: Let cool slightly before serving to toddlers. For babies, ensure mash is smooth and at a safe temperature.

Notes

Storage: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze in toddler-sized portions for up to 1 month. Reheat gently, adding a splash of milk if needed.
Age Modifications: For babies under 1, mash until smooth and skip added salt. For toddlers, you can keep it a little chunkier to encourage chewing.
Allergy-Friendly: Use dairy-free milk and plant-based butter for a dairy-free version.
Boost Nutrition: Stir in a teaspoon of ground flaxseed, chia seeds, or a little nutritional yeast for extra vitamins and minerals.
